'Helpful and Inspiring Resources' from Ebb & Spruce (ebbandspruce.com)My clients often say “I just didn’t know where or how to get started!” If you’re wanting to find some calm and control in your life, I’ve compiled a list of some of my favourite blogs, books, and films that can help you get the ball rolling in that direction.

Before I get started, I want to emphasize that you do NOT have to be or become a so-called “minimalist” to benefit from these resources. They share simple how-to’s, food for thought, and personal experiences to guide you to a simpler life. That simpler life can look however you want it to. (It’s never a bad idea to try to picture it or articulate  what it feels like though!)

Ok, here we go. Check it out.

Joshua Becker of Becoming Minimalist was one of the first bloggers I stumbled upon when I was exploring the language of decluttering and simplicity. You might find his compilations of articles a great way to open the door to simplifying your life. Find them under the recurring title “Inspired Simplicity. Weekend Reads.” I’ve had the pleasure of shaking his hand and attending his live talk here in Victoria!

Be More With Less. Doesn’t that just say it all? Now famous for her Project 333, Courtney Carver has a lovely, gentle approach. Courtney is passionate about really living life, and creating a lifestyle that promotes health. (More on health in a future blog post, for sure!)

This local gal was on a mission to get out of debt and although she succeeded, it took a further shopping ban for her to get to the root of the problem. Meet Cait Flanders. She rocks. She’s honest and fresh and easy to relate to. Formerly known as Blonde on a Budget, this may be one of my favourite posts of hers, outlining her discomfort with the label “minimalist.”

You might love the straight-forwardness of Joshua Fields Millburn and Ryan Nicodemus, The Minimalists. If the direct approach freaks you out, check out their documentary, Minimalism: A Documentary About The Important Things. It shows their down-to-earth side, hugging and all.

I love Rachel Jonat’s book, Do Less: A Minimalist Guide to a Simplified, Organized and Happy Life. Really, it’s so great! This Vancourerite offers fresh perspectives, even for those of us who have been reading about this stuff for eons. The Minimalist Mom isn’t just for family folks -she’s got tips and strategies for everyone!

Another exception book is New Order: A Decluttering Handbook For Creative Folks (And Everyone Else), by Fay Wolf. While being full of marvelous and practical tips, it is so inspirational!

No Sidebar -great guest writers, and just a simple, appealing delivery! They’re all about you designing the life you want, and they do it with such inspiring words! Follow them on Facebook!

Slow Your Home -Brooke McAlary is also worth following on social media for additional inspiration. I cannot wait to read her new book, Destination Simple: Everyday Rituals for a Slower Life! Her take on “organizing” is very similar to my own…read here.

See below for a few of my personal heroes, or works that have left a deep impression. They’re not directly about decluttering or organizing but they definitely touch on finding simplicity via awareness, and intention. Borrow resources from a friend, or from your local library, and be sure to check on Netflix too.

Bea Johnson of Zero Waste Home (great book too!)

Colin Beavan, aka No Impact Man (great documentary too!)

Michael Pollan -I’d start with The Omnivore’s Dilemma but I also love In Defense of Food (great books!)

The True Cost, and Happy (both great documentaries; one about the impact of the fashion industry on people and the planet, the other about happiness, duh!)

And the list would feel bereft if I did not mention Gretchen Rubin. She’s basically an expert on happiness, and her books have wonderful insight on energy level and possessions! Get your hands on The Happiness Project to get you started, or take her habits/tendencies quiz for some self reflection.

Gosh! There are so, so many more resources. Google away, and please be sure to let me know what your favourites are!

And hey! If you’re moved by what you’ve read or watched, and are ready to simplify your space, let me assist you! Let’s roll with that good energy!
